Hi everyone!
My name is Laura Godbold. I am 35 years old. I am originally
from New Jersey, but I am living in Saint Augustine, Florida. I am married to
Deaf/sighted husband. We have two
beautiful Deaf/sighted children; 4 years old boy and 3 years old girl (she will
turn 3 in less than two weeks from now).
I have an Ushers Syndrome type 1. I am profoundly Deaf and
use ASL as my primary language. In addition, I have been learning how to use
Haptics and Pro-tactile, which is very helpful in my teaching position.
I did go to a mainstreaming program in my elementary years.
But I ended up being the only Deaf student in my Middle and High School in New
Jersey. And then, I attended Gallaudet University, where I learned more about
and began to identify myself as a DeafBlind person. I graduated with a B.A.
degree in 2005 and Master’s degree in ASL/Deaf Studies in 2007. Now, I am a
part-time professor at University of North Florida. I teach a course,
Interpreting for Persons who are DeafBlind.
Moreover, I am not the only DeafBlind person in my family. I
am the oldest to my sister, Melissa Haynes, whom is one of the mentors for this
upcoming event in June. Years ago I
attended a Transition Institute and this is my first time to participate in
this event as a co-presenter and co-facilitator.
In my spare time, I enjoy watching movies, working out,
working on crafts, outdoor activities, traveling, and, the most of all,
spending time with my husband and children.
I look forward to meeting and working with you all! I am
excited!
You are who you are! Don’t change who you are! BE YOU! ☺
See you all in June,
Laura Godbold
