Tips for
Young Adults
College and Self-Advocacy
1.
Understand
your choices after high school. Don’t view transition as “just another school
subject”. Get involved in your IEP meetings.
2.
Begin
your scholarship search early and don’t stop while in college.
3.
Contact
the disability services office at your college early and identify yourself.
4.
Know
your accommodations and how to request them. Be prepared to defend why you need
them.
5.
Register
for classes as early as possible.
6.
Contact
your professors ahead of time so they can get to know you and your specific
accommodations/needs.
7.
Get all
necessary materials for classes as early as possible.
8.
Find a
“buddy”; someone to help you with assignments and keep you motivated.
9.
Get
involved with Voc. Rehab during high school so they can help with tuition and
your mobility needs.
10.
Communicate
your needs with everyone!
