Tips for Families

1.           Do things with your children, not for your children.
2.           Be patient.
3.           Get involved with your child in deafblind events, workshops, etc.
4.           Don’t be afraid for them. Encourage them and be supportive.
5.           For IEP meetings, listen to your child for their needs and wants.
6.           Allow your child to take the lead in their needs for accommodations.
7.           Start early with setting high expectations and responsibilities around the house.
8.           Don’t be overprotective.
9.           Allow your child the dignity to fail and learn from his/her mistakes.
10.        Nobody can rise to low expectations!

11.        Family follow through- as hard as it is sometimes to let your child struggle or get frustrated or make a mess or make a mistake…. That is the road to independence. Every task you do tor your child right now, from this moment on ask yourself…. Is this something that, with time, with technique, with tool….. they can do for themselves. Let it be.
