Melissa

Hi my name is Melissa Haynes and I am excited to be one of the DB Mentors for this Transition Institute. A few years ago I came to a Transition Institute and still keep in touch with some of the same people. I know you will have a great experience!

I was born and grew up in New Jersey. I went to a mainstream school for 14 years and then moved to Florida in 2004. I graduated from Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind in 2009. I was on honor roll every year and won 2nd runner up and 1st runner up in the high school talent pageant. I went to three different colleges in a few years, but I am not finished yet. One day, I will come back to school!

I was invited to the “invitation only" Deaf Olympics in 2008 for Martial Arts in Taiwan, where I won the bronze medal. I have 8 years of martial arts training and also have a black belt. I used to be martial arts instructor assistant.

I met my soul mate in Alabama and I have been married for three years and have a two year old son who keeps me very busy. We have lived in Alabama for over two years. I am a stay at home mom and I enjoy riding my tricycle and walking with my son in his stroller daily.

In the addition, I have a job at Publix as Front Clerk Service (bagger). I pack foods and items in plastic or brown paper bag for customers. I carry out to their cars as my pleasure.

Also I just set up my photography business. Photography is truly my passion! I can see amazing pictures in my eyes. Be prepared for pictures from me! Here is my photography website:

I also enjoy doing crafts and adult coloring books. I am an “open book” so feel free to ask me anything!  I have an Usher Syndrome type 1, and have some vision and use a cane at night. I use ASL to communicate. I am an advocate for Deaf-Blind rights and feel we can do anything!
